July 2020 Maintenance

July 2020 Maintenance

8th July 2020

Mowing height should be 20mm to 45mm through July with frequent mowing to maintain sward density, three times per week if conditions allow.

Grooming and verticutting will reduce excess lateral growth and allow more air into the organic layer encouraging thatch degradation.  Aeration is still a key operation at this time of year to maintain drainage and aeration.  Needle tines are ideal at this time letting air and water in with minimal surface disruption.  Aeration should be at varying depths to avoid soil pan development.

Continue to apply VitaSil monthly to harden blades and encourage upright growth for a clean cut, and regulate water within the turf as temperature increases.  Continued application of Seaturf +Fe will aid enzyme activity in the turf and boost micro-organism activity in the organic layer helping to reduce debris build up.  Amino-sorb F will aid seedling growth, deep rooting and stress resistance in the turf as we go into the warmer period.

Liquid fertilisers offer easy application of foliar or root-zone delivered nutrients without surface granules on the pitch in dry conditions.  Vitax Enhance F and Vitax 50-50 liquid feeds are available in a range of analyses to meet all liquid fertiliser needs.  During hot periods, higher K fertiliser is recommended to high N fertiliser to strengthen the turf and avoid more vulnerable soft growth.

Watch out for turf diseases: Red Thread, Fairy Rings, Anthracnose and Leaf Spot.  Fertilisation with SwardPhite and VitaSil plus higher K fertiliser will reduce the turf’s susceptibility to disease attack.

July summary:

• Mow height 20mm to 45mm (take care with re-seeded areas, do not cut below 30mm) with increased mowing frequency.

• SwardPhite and Amino-sorb F to improve seedling growth and root depth.

• Application of Seaturf + Fe

• Liquid fertiliser application is ideal in summer, use Vitax Enhance F or 50-50 liquid Feed.

• Irrigation as necessary, especially on repaired and seeded areas.

• Disease vigilance.
